Homestay near Otavalo

2 days or longer

Otavalo is a place full of tradition and it is also in this region that you will still find a lot of indigenous communities. Here you can get to know and live the indigenous lifestyle. Coexist with your local family and experience their daily activities in a up-close and personal way.

Itinerary

Day 1: Upon arrival at the local community you are being welcomed into the home of your host family. You will have some time to settle in before it’s time to join in the daily activities. What your time at the homestay looks like, and the activities you will participate in depends very much on the family that you will stay with and their activities of that specific day. Most of the people in this area are living mainly from agriculture. Some of the families keep animals in their garden, others have a piece of land in the village where they work during the day. So it might be that you go out in the afternoon to gather grass to feed the animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. Or that you will work on the fields together with your family. Or you could help your host mom with the preparation of the meal you will share together later that evening. The one thing that is certain is that it will be a once in a life time experience to live together with your host family and that you will get a unique glimpse of the daily life of the people in this rural area.

Day 2: After one last breakfast together with your host family it is already time to say your goodbyes. Today you will continue your trip. You will be brought back to Otavalo or to your next destination.

In the 3 days / 2 nights tour, the program for day 2 is as follows: After breakfast together with your host family you will depart for your day excursion. Upon arrival back at the community you can take some time for yourself or help your host mom with the preparation of the meal you will share together later that evening.

The people in the community speak Spanish. However, you might hear them speak a different language amongst themselves sometimes; this is their native language named Kichwa. No need to worry if you don´t master Spanish and you certainly don´t have to speak Kichwa. You will be amazed how it’s possible to communicate with each other even without speaking each other’s language.  Moreover, all the families participating in the homestay program are used to receiving foreign guests and they will make you feel right at home. They love to open their homes to you and to show their way of life in the village. When traveling with children we will try to host you with a family that has children of a similar age as well.
