The Bellavista Reserve is located at the southern edge of the Chocó region, an extended area, reaching from Panamá to Peru, famous for its great biodiversity and endemicity within, probably due to the Andes isolating flora and fauna. Discover botanical treasures such as bromeliads and orchids, that are in bloom year round and enjoy the presence of over 330 recorded species of birds in this area. Bellavista’s cloud forest will amaze you.

Itinerary

Day 1: Leaving Quito, you will descend a scenic mountain road with forested mountains and beautiful views.   Reaching the turn to Bellavista, you climb to the top of the mountain, again with fabulous views, where the Bellavista lodge is perched. Once arrived at the lodge, you will have some time to settle into your room after which it is time for a special breakfast while enjoying the hummingbirds that fly all around you.  Then you are invited to join the first hike into the forest. After a tasty lunch, you can choose to go on another guided hike with a Bellavista naturalist guide or explore the forest on your own. A guided hike will acquaint you with the exuberant vegetation (orchids, bromeliads, ferns, trees, etc.) of the cloud forest, its bird life, and the fascinating adaptations to life in this special environment. In the evening you can relax and you have some time for yourself. We recommend you take time to admire the incredible variety of moths, many of which are unknown to science or look for night birds such as the Common Potoo!

Day 2: After a refreshing night’s sleep, an early morning bird hike in the serene morning light is well worthwhile. Breakfast will be served at 8:00 AM. Afterwards, you have the option to visit the waterfall, either on your own or together with the guide.  Every hike reveals something new even for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in the forest every day! Lunch is served at 1:00 PM and afterwards you can choose whether you want to take a short hike or just relax at the lodge while enjoying the hummingbirds around you. Then it will be time to pack your suitcase and to get ready for your return to Quito, where you will arrive in around 5:00 PM.

The climate in the Bellavista Cloud Forest is humid. In the morning it can be warm and sunny, afternoons can be marked with rain and followed with a temperature drop. It is recommended to wear long trousers and socks and use mosquito repellent.
